About

Welcome to Commendable: Books and Activities for the Little Children. Inspired by Scripture’s call to take discipling children seriously, I created this blog to share some resources with likeminded parents, grandparents, and anyone else who wants to spark wonder and curiosity for Jesus in little children. A big impetus for this site was realizing that many Christian children books aren’t available in local libraries or even seminary libraries, meaning parents would have to purchase them to see if they were any good. The kicker? They aren’t all good. In fact, some Christian children’s books are downright heretical (here’s looking at you $2.99 Nativity book).

As a mother, more than anything I pray for my son to follow Jesus every day of his life. To do so, I want to disciple him– disciple him using quality materials that are accessible to him and activities that are developmentally appropriate. I am compelled by love to protect him– not only from the dangers of the world– but also from teaching that might inform an inaccurate view of God and His Word.

That’s why I review Christian children’s books on this site. To each review, I bring my ministry training to discern whether the content accurately reflects the God of the Bible and His Word. When reviewing a book, I think of Philippians 4:8 and ask myself a few questions:

Is it true? That is, does the book accurately reflect God’s Word?

Is it lovely? Are the illustrations beautiful and engaging to the eye? Or are they so-so (or even a little scary to little eyes).

Is it commendable? Can I recommend this book to my parent friends? Would I buy it as a baby shower gift? What is its value for teaching?

Finally, deviating from Philippians 4:8 into pragmatics, I observe to see if it is engaging to small children. Because a beautifully illustrated and accurate book is only helpful if it is read by the target audience.

Following the reviews, I engage my creative side to come up with a series of play-based learning activities that go along with each book. These activities are designed to be fun, developmentally appropriate, and easily done at home. The purpose is to reinforce the learning, and also to help the children wonder and explore their faith in an accessible way.

I hope you find this website helpful to you as you teach the little children.
